Description

"237. Chinatown & Orange Grove, Los Angeles, Cal." published by Continental Stereographic Company, New York, ca. 1880s. The image is taken from a building near the Plaza and looking east. The upper end of Los Angeles Street, as it turned toward the Plaza is at the center, with one-story adobe houses along it. This was the Chinatown of the 1870s and afterward. In the background, east of Alameda Street is an orange grove, later the site of a subsequent Chinatown and now Union Station. Further in the distance is the area around the Los Angeles River and Boyle Heights. With significant losses, staining, and soiling, especially to the matte, the condition is poor to fair.
