"305. Pavilion and Electric Road, Rubio Canyon," by Pierce and McConnell, Los Angeles, ca. 1895. The image shows the white multi-story Rubio Pavilion hotel and dining room tucked in at the back of the canyon. At left is an exposed mountainside with the track and electric power poles of the Mt. Lowe Railway leading to the pavilion. A few persons are discerned on the track and at the pavilion, which was built in 1893 when the railway opened, but closed in 1903 because of storm damage and was destroyed six years later by further storm activity. The captin is at the lower left and the photographer's cartouche at the lower right. On the reverse is an essay about southern California, including statistics from 1891. With some soiling, edge rubbing and dented corners, the overall condition is good.
