STEREOSCOPIC PHOTOGRAPH, "35. PART OF LOS ANGELES, FROM FORT HILL," by Henry T. Payne, 1870s. The view is to the northeast and shows the Pico House hotel and part of the Merced Theater at right, the Plaza at center, and the opening of Olvera Street at left. In the foreground are the rear yards of structures on the west side of Main Street. In the background upper left is the Sisters of Charity School for girls. The reverse has an inscription in pencil: "An American Hotel rises at the Plaza in the early seventies / H. T. Payne." There is also a property label at the center. The item, which was cleanly cut in two down the center of the paired images and has a notable crease on the right image, is in fair to good condition overall.
