"PRODUCTION AND USE OF PETROLEUM IN CALIFORNIA" Color: Black; White "Production and Use of Petroleum in California," by Lewis E. Aubury (Sacramento: California State Mining Bureau and State Printing Office,) 1904. The 230-page softcover book, with the detached front cover as item b) consists of two parts. Part one concerning production has chapters on the history of state oil production; topography, geology and drilling; and field operations. Part two on uses of crude oil features chapters on physical characteristics of crude, oil as fuel, injection and burners, fireboxes, storage and heating, regulation of oil fires, liquid fuel in locomotives, liquid fuel on steamships, minor uses of fuel oil, petroleum in gas making, oiled roads, the state's oil refining industry, and the chemistry of state petroleum. There are many photographs and fold-out maps of fields, as well as charts. With adhesive tape on the spine, cover creases, discoloration on the pages and covers, flaking of the cover, some foxing, missing portions of the cover, cover stains, staple tarnish, and tears, the overall condition of the cover is poor, while the contents are generally good.
