"55. Part of Los Angeles from Franklin St. hill", Henry T. Payne and Company, ca. 1875. The view is from Bunker Hill looking east. Franklin Street, also known as Court Street is at the right heading toward New High Street and Spring Street. At the center is the Rocha Adobe, sold the county by Jonathan Temple in the early 1850s for use as a courthouse, while the two-stpry adobe and brick county/city jail is in the yard behind the building. At the left is the County Courthouse, built by Temple as a market house in 1859. There is a mix of commercial and residential structures in view, as well. The margins of the mount have the photographer's name and series name of "Semi-Tropical California Scenery." With soiling and staining, including on the image and fairly heavy edge wear to the mount, the condition is fair.
