Description

An unmounted cabinet card, "599 The Oil Fields near First, Los Angeles, Cal.," by F. H. Maude, stamped 2 April 1898. The image shows about twenty wooden derricks, wooden tanks, houses and other structures, and trees in an area with low hills, probably in the Temple-Beaudry area west of downtown where Charles Canfield and Edward Doheny struck oil six years prior. The title and photographer's name are in white at the bottom. On the reverse is the stamp of F. H. Maude and Company and another from the Santa Fe Route News Service, managed by Fred Harvey, this latter having the date of 2 April 1898. With paper residue on the back from being pasted down, some curvature, a few creases and light soiling, the overall condition is good.
