Description

A stereoscopic photograph, "6. Sonora, Los Angeles, from Pico House," published by Henry T. Payne as part of the Southern California Scenery series, ca. 1875. The photo is likely a reissue of a circa 1870 image taken by William M. Godfrey, whose numbering and use of a white paper label are present and whose inventory was acquired by Payne. The view is from an upper floor of the Pico House looking over the west side of Plaza, including a wooden fence, with openings at the centers and corners. Left of center behind the Plaza is an adobe building with a grocery store at its west end (this became an early restaurant ran by black entrepreneurs during the mid-70s). There are two roads, including the extension of North Main Street. The photograph is in fair condition with moderate surface soiling, abrasions, possible silverfish damage to the top, right.
