Description

A black and white cabinet photograph of Frank Cooper on a bicycle, ca. 1890s. The studio image shows the young man in a sleeveless white shirt, dark shorts and light boots on the bicycle, which has downturned handle bars and light colored tires, which is on a rug in front of a floral backdrop and near a potted tree. The name and city of Monrovia are in pencil on the reverse. Cooper was born in Nebraska in 1877 and his father was a bee-keeper in Monrovia for many years, while Frank worked in the oil industry, as a chauffeur and as a lineman in Santa Paula, Los Angeles, Montebello and Upland, at the last of which he died in 1946. A July 1897 newspaper article notes that Cooper was in a bicycle race in Los Angeles--this would be about the time the photo was taken. With stains and soiling on the mount, the overall condition is good.
