Description

A black and white cabinet photograph of Harry Blatenburg on a mule, Pasadena, ca. 1880s. The young boy, perhaps age 12 or so, sits on the saddled mule on Green Street near an intersection with a large pepper tree on the corner. In the distance, to the east, are some structures. On the reverse is an ink inscription: "Harry Blatenburg / Pasadena, looking East/ on Green Street." Born in Iowa in 1874, Blatenburg came to Pasadena about 1877 with his carpenter father and family. He remained in the city until his death in 1935 and was a longtime shoe merchant. With some stains, soiling, moderate foxing, losses, abrasions, and fading, the condition is fair to poor
