Description

A black and white carte de visite studio portrait of Noah L. Levering, Jr., Ellis and Son, Los Angeles, ca. 1880s. The image has the subject within an oval frame and he wears a black overcoat with a wide lape, a dark vest, a white shirt, and a dark cravat. On the reverse in pencil is "Noah Lee Levering" and the photographer's cartouche. Levering, a native of Missouri, moved to Los Angeles as a boy with his apiarist (bee keeper) father, a former judge in Illinois of the same name and other family. He was a teacher and merchant in the county before relocating to Redlands, where he was a stationery merchant and served in the state assembly. His wife, Ella Gird, was a second cousin to Richard Gird, owner of Rancho Santa Ana del Chino. With moderate fading, soiling, some small stains and abrasions, the overall condition is fair.
