Description
A black and white press photo of Amapola del Vando, queen of the San Gabriel grape festival, 3 October 1928. The image shows the young woman in Mexican costume, including a dark strap dress, shawl and a wide fan holding a bunch of grapes while leaning against the "mother vine" near Mission San Gabriel. A typed caption is pasted down on the reverse and notes that the 1928 crop was a record one and that California raised 90% of the nation's grapes. Del Vando, who lived in Alhambra, went on to be an actress in the film industry through the 1950s. With stains on the reverse, soiling, tears on the edges, creases and soiling, the condition is fair.
