Description

A black and white real photograhic postcard of Pacific Sightseeing tour group in an open-aired bus, ca. 1910s. A group of thirty tourists are seated in an open aired bus that is parked in front of a building butted up against a mountain. A tour guide stands at the left and holds a megaphone. The group composed of men, women and one child, all wear suits or dresses and hats. The sign on the bus reads "Pacific No. 15/Pacific Sightseeing/San Francisco Cal./Taken At The Cliff House." The Cliff House was was a seaside resort for the weatlhy with an art and photo gallery situated in the building, it later was known for gambling and alcohol services which prompted the owner to make the establishement more "family friendly" by revamping the structure and the restaurant. The building was destroyed by fire two times and was finally rebuilt a third and last time in 1909 by the owner's daughter, Emma Sutro Merritt. With minor warping, soiling on the reverse, it is in good condition overall.
