Description
A cabinet card of South Park School, Los Angeles, ca. 1887. The image shows a few dozen students of varying ages standing in front of the building. The school is a frame construction and is one-story with a two-story center bell tower. The building stands amid open space and fields with no indication of nearby buildings. On the reverse are ink inscriptions giving the location as Manchester and Avalon streets, where the modern South Park School stands. Also the inscription identifies a girl (with an indicating arrow on the photo) as Katie Nissen, the mother of the inscriber; and states that the school was known to him as Green Meadows School, though the school of that name is further south. The Nissen family resided at Green Meadows during that era and appears in the 1880 census there. With heavy soiling, edge abrasion and minor stains, the overall conditoin is fair.
