Description

A cabinet card of a partially-clothed mule at Camp Chilao, San Gabriel Mountains, 1898. The view shows the animal with his forelegs on a rough wood stool and wearing a hat, jacket and two pairs of pants. The creature is in a clearing in front of a rough log cabin with a sign reading "Chilleo [Chilao]" In ink on the revrese is "Bosso 100 years old / Camp Cheleo / Sierra Madra [sic] Mts / Cal." The San Gabriel range was then known as the Sierra Madre and Chilao Flats is now west of Highway 2 above La Cañada/Flintridge. With small stains, soiling and rubbing to the matte, while the photo looks clean, the overall condition is good.
