Description

A cabinet card photograph "North Main St. From Temple Block," Ellis and Son, Los Angeles, ca. 1885. The image is taken from an upper floor of the Temple Block at the intersection of Main, Spring and Temple streets and appears to be taken before the start of a civic function, perhaps a parade. Persons are gathered on the sides of the street, atop buildings, such as on the portico roof of the Downey Block to the left, and elsewhere. The street also has many horse-drawn vehicles and pedestrians in it. To the north past the St. Charles Hotel, Arcadia Block and other commercial buildings are the Pico House, Merced Theater, Masonic Lodge and the Plaza in the distance. On the reverse is the Ellis and Son cartouche and the title in ink. With heavy staining, soiling, edge abrasion, and moderate fading, the condition is fair.
