Description

A cabinet card photograph of an actor son of thespian Joseph Jefferson, Elkanah P. Tresslar, Los Angeles, ca. 1895. The head-and-upper-torso portrait shows the twenty-something man wearing a dark three-piece suit, white shirt, and black wide necktie. On the reverse is the pencil inscription, "Jefferson / famous actor." There were several sons of Joseph Jefferson who performed on the stage, as well, and it is not clear which of these is pictured here. Tresslar, from Indiana and who was a musician in a Civil War infantry regiment in that state, worked as a photographer in Kansas before coming to Los Angeles and remained in the business until the 1910s. The overall condition is good.
