2012.126.1.1Description
A cabinet card photograph of an indoor exhibition booth, Charles H. Shaffner, Los Angeles, ca. 1888. The image shows the booth, with fluted posts at the corners and what looks like thin logs spanning them. Laced throughout the booth are ropes of white material looking almost like popcorn. Various sized balls are hanging within the booth, which also has tables arranged in a square at the perimeter and a couple of chairs inside the tables. Floral material seems to be on the tables and there are calla lillies at the right corner. Some persons stand in the background near a ladder and at the left, but there is no identification as to location and event. At the bottom of the mount is a series name, "Shaffner's California Views" and his studio address. The son of clergyman and a photographer in his teens in Boulder, Colorado, Shaffner moved with his family to Los Angeles and worked in the city from 1888 until 1896, when he relocated to San Bernardino, remaining there until the 1920s, when he returned to Los Angeles. With stains, soiling, edge abrasions, and a missing piece showing white at the right third of the image, the condition is fair.Lexicon
