Description

A cabinet card photograph of oranges groves and vineyard from the house of William H. Winston, San Gabriel Valley, Elias A. Bonine, Pasadena, ca. 1880s. The image shows, through an opening in some trees in the house yard, rows of orange groves and vineyards on the Winston ranch. A native of Alabama, Winston, a Confederate veteran, bought 180 acres from Benjamin D. Wilson in 1868 and created the groves and vineyard, as well as built a home and outbuildings. Winston died in 1886. His third wife and five of his eight children resided on the ranch after his death. The property is now within the City of San Marino. The image is in good condition despite the abrasion damage along the edges and warping.
