Description

A cabinet card photograph of persons in front of a residence in San Gabriel Canyon, 26 January 1896. There are five men, a boy and a woman posed near the clapboard building with a simple gabled shingled roof, which sits at the base of the mountains. A rough pole fence with chicken wire extends out from the house. A canvas-type awning covers the front and the boy sits atop one corner. One of the men stands at right next to a horse. On the reverse is an inscription: "San Gabriel Canyon, Sierra Madre rang . . . / California / Dan Turner David Girard [?] ---- / Andenkin an George Viola / 26 Januar 1896." The writing may be from a European. With missing portions of the corner of the matte, very heavy soiling, stains, other missing parts of the matte, fading, and edge abrasions, the condition is poor to fair.
