Description

A cabinet card photograph of the Arrow Head Nursery, Pasadena, 20 January 1893. The image shows two men at the gate of the business, which has a slatted wood structure, a clapboard building behind it, and a larger building, perhaps a house, in the background. Some plants are visible within the fenced area. A sign at the top gives the nursery name within an image of an arrowhead, as well as the name of proprietor Byron O. Clark, who is likely the younger man in the image. A native of Delhi, Iowa (west of Dubuque), Clark opened a nursery near Millard Canyon about 1875 and was involved in several Pasadena businesses afterward. The name for Altadena came from him and his 200 acre spread before he went to the Linda Vista area of Pasadena to open a nursery (perhaps Arrow Head.) In 1898, he organized a colony of California farmers to settle in Wahiawa, Oah'u, Hawai'i, where they pioneered pineapple raising. After serving as the territory's agricultural commissioner, Clark moved to Honolulu by 1907. In the 1910s, he returned to California and lived in Nimshew, northeast of Chico in Butte County and died there in the 1920s. With heavy fading, soiling, and edge abrasion, the condition overall is fair to poor.
