Description

A cabinet card photograph of the Densmore-Stabler Refining Company plant, by Theodore C. Marceau, Los Angeles, ca. 1901. The image shows several men and a boy gathered in and near the foreground. A few have suits on, possibly the owners, and other wear work clothes. Some are on or near horse-drawn vehicles, including two with tanks and one a flatbed conveyance. Some men stand on or near five large steel tanks behind the vehicles and one man is atop a wooden structure further back. A brick refining structure is at the far left distance and across the street to the upper right are two structures. Both have company signs and one notes the company made lubricating oils, asphaltum and distillates. One founder was Emmet Densmore, a medical doctor with oil experience in Pennsylvania, whose company was located at East Ninth Street at the Santa Fe Railway tracks (the photo was then likely looking southeast.) In 1904, the Densmore-Stabler firm was bought out by the Turner Oil Company. With minor stains or foxing in the sky portion of the image, abrasions, mirroring most noticable on the bottom right edge, and stains to the mount, the condition is good.
