Description

A cabinet card photograph, "Palm Drive, Los Angeles Cal.," ca. 1900s. The view is of the long palm-lined driveway from the former Longstreet estate, built by New York clothier Charles A. Longstreet in the 1870s and which was renowned for its expansive and costly gardens and subdivided by his widow in the late 1880s. Portions of two residences are at the sides and what appears to be the Longstreet house is in the distance at the end of the drive. The site is now occupied by the Orthopaedic Institute for Children and 23 of the palms survive on this corridor. With light fading, minor soiling and slight rubbing and warping to the matte, the overall condition is good.
