Description

A cabinet card portrait of Alpheus C. Ledbetter, by George Westervelt, Los Angeles, March 1892. The image shows the man in an upper torso and head shot and he wears a gray coat and a shirt that is unbuttoned at the collar and with no neckwear. In ink on the reverse is the inscription, "From A. C. Ledbetter / March 1892." Ledbetter, born in May 1844 near Greensboro, North Carolina, moved to near St. Joseph's Missouri with his family and volunteered for Union forces during the Civil War, being stationed in Arkansas. After the war, he returned to his Andrew County, Missouri home and later worked as a farm hand near Bozeman, Montana. Later, he relocated to Los Angeles and worked as a carpenter. Although he lived with his sister, Delphina and her daughter's family in Burbank, Ledbetter spent many years at the National Soldiers' Home at Sawtelle, where he died in February 1925. With some foxing, soilign, rubbing and slight pest damage on the reverse, the overall condition is good.
