Description

A cabinet card portrait of Caroline Fogal Duncan, E. W. Fortune, Los Angeles, ca. 1888. The full-length portrait shows the subject standing with her right hand resting on a classical-style pedestal and in front of a backdrop. She wears a dark outfit, including a floor-length skirt, with three or four lines of white piping at the front, sleeves and lower part of the skirt, a top with a high collar at the front of which is a brooch, and many buttons down the front. A pencil inscription on the reverse reads, "Caroline." Fogal was born to Andrew Fogal and Phoebe Bruch in 1865 and the family resided at Green Meadows in south Los Angeles. After Andrew Fogal died in 1874, his widow married Caleb Davis, a ranch hand about 19 years her junior and Jennie lived with them until her marriage to Robert Duncan in 1880. After his death about fifteen years later, she married Zoeth Eldridge and Carolina died in 1948. With moderate abrasions, the overall condition is good to fair.
