Description

A cabinet card portrait of Phoebe Fogal, Bisbee, Los Angeles, ca. 1888. The full-length portrait shows the subject standing with her left arm leaning against a classical-style pedestal and in front of a backdrop. She wears a dark outfit, including a floor-length skirt, a jacket with some velvet trim at the lapels and sleeves and many buttons down the front, and a high white collar. A pen inscription on the reverse reads, "Grandma Phoebe Fogal Davis." Fogal, born Phoebe Bruch in 1837, came to California in 1852 with her husband Andrew and children. After living for a time in El Monte, the family moved to a property at Green Meadows in south Los Angeles. After Andrew Fogal died in 1874, his widow married Charles Davis, a ranch hand about 19 years her junior and the two had a couple of children. By 1899, the Davises divorced and Phoebe lived until 1924. With minor abrasions along the edges, moderate yellowing and some begining signs of foxing, the photograph is in good to fair condition.
