Description

A cabinet card studio portrait of a Latina woman, The Excelsior (Benjamin F. Conaway), San Bernardino, ca. late 1890s. The view shows the woman in a headshot view wearing a light colored overgarment, dark colored undergarment and looking off to her right. There are no further identifying marks, except the printed photographer's information at the bottom. The Excelsior was a studio run by Benjamin F. Conaway, formerly a photographer in Santa Ana, California, and whose son-in-law, A. Otis Birch was an oil magnate in Brea Canyon and a furniture manufacturer in Los Angeles. Birch was also a business partner of Walter P. Temple in the Central Finance Building Company in Los Angeles. With a missing upper left corner, extensive staining and soiling and abrasion, the condition is poor.
