2012.538.1.1Description
A cabinet photograph of the Henry Donato butcher shop, C. M. Straight, Los Angeles, 1904. The black and white view shows the interior of the narrow and deep structure with various cuts of meet hanging at both sides, some potted palm trees on cans in front of the counter, two men in white smocks, a wall clock, lights, and a strange silhouette of a long-beaked bird at the center (as if it was inserted for some reason.) Inscribed in pencil on the reverse is "Henry Donator Butcher Shop 1904." Donato, born to a mulatto family from Opelousas, Louisiana near Lafayette in January 1868 operated the shop at the family home at 839 Alpine Street in Los Angeles for decades from about 1890 until at least 1932 and died in the house in 1944. The photographer's stamp is on the reverse with an address of 321 W. Temple St., where he lived in 1903. Charles M. Straight was born in Allegheny, PA in 1867 and lived with his family in Kansas City in 1880, about which time the family migrated to Oregon and then, about 1882, to Los Angeles. By 1888, Straight was practicing photography and was listed in the city directory in 1903 as still in that line of work. A Charles M. Straight, aged 42, died in San Francisco in December 1909, but was said to have been born in California. With the upper right corner of the matte lost, moderate yellowing, and some soiling on the image, the condition is fair.Lexicon
