2012.368.1.1Description
A cabinet studio portrait of a baby boy, Everett S. Comings, Los Angeles, 16 February 1899. The view shows the child, wearing a white gown, probably for a christening, sitting in a rustic wood chair covered with what looks like a woolen Indian blanket and in a plain studio setting. There is a name on the reverse that reads "Roy R." and then a surname, which is not easily read. The photographer's cartouche is on the bottom. Comings, born in Wisconsin in 1857, lived in Rockford, Illinois, where he married and he and his wife had two sons. Between 1891 and 1893, he migrated from St. Joseph, Missouri to Los Angeles and practiced photography until about 1900. After a divorce, he went to Bakersfield and then to Kansas City, where he remarried and lived until the early 1940s. In 1917, he was listed as having a "movie photo" occupation in Kansas City, but was in real estate thereafter. With a reverse stain, minor soiling and some edge abrasions, the condition is good.Lexicon
