2012.363.1.1Description
A cabinet studio portrait of a man commemorating Palm Sunday, Zadok W. Evans, Los Angeles, 1892. The view shows a man, looking to be in his forties, seated and wearing a check-patterned light-colored jacket and trousers, a black shirt and white vertical striping, and a dark horizonal striped tie. He holds a branch and leaves in his left hand across his lap and has a smaller branch tucked into the coat breast pocket along with what appear to be wilting lillies or a handkerchief. A lengthy ink inscription on the reverse explains that the photo was taken the first Palm Sunday the subject, known only as Eustace, was in Los Angeles. It also mentions which church he attended and the time and date of his arrival in October 1891 on the Santa Fe railroad, as well as staying at the Natick Hotel upon arrival. A separate ink inscription reads "For Tom's / Marrch 6th 1893 / Birth Day." As for Evans, he only worked in Los Angeles for brief periods in 1888 and 1892/93 and was otherwise in Centralia, Illinois and Orlando, Florida most of his career. With discoloration from acid burn, a few minor stains, soiling and edge abrasions, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
