2013.223.1.1Description
A cabinet studio portrait of a mother and two children, Conaway and Hummel, Santa Ana, ca. 1888. The view shows the woman and smaller child, probably a boy less than two years old, seated on an unusual bench or settee with gnarled wood framing. The child holds a portrait of a baby in his hands, presumably one of himself. A girl, perhaps four years old, stands at the left leaning against the bench. An elaborate cartouche for the photographers is on the reverse. Benjamin F. Conaway later became the father-in-law of A. Otis Birch, oil magnate in Brea Canon, and partner of Walter P. Temple in the Central Finance Building Company of Los Angeles. Birch and his wife, in their 90s during the late 1960s, were kidnapped by a nurse and taken to Texas, where she died and Birch was married to the nurse, after which he soon died. With some heavy rubbing and light soiling, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
