Description

A cabinet studio portrait of Juanita Chillis, Sunbeam Art Gallery, Los Angeles, August 1898. The view shows the torso and head of the young woman, who had turned 17 years old, and who stands behind a fabric-covered item. She wears a white dress with much decorative embroidery on it and has a pin at the neck and a pocket watch at the left breast with the chain affixed to the center of her breast. Her hair is gathered in back and there is some type of headpiece in the top back and perhaps a ribbon at the back. The subject was from Arkansas and lived in St. Louis before her parents, William J., a sign painter, and Lizzie, migrated to Los Angeles. By 1895, William was dead and Lizzie and her two sons and Juanita lived at 6th and Hope in downtown. Lillie remarried in resided in the Hawthorne area and brother Leo remained in the region, but nothing further is known of Juanita. With some soiling and edge abrasions, and warping, the condition is good.
