Description

A carte de visite sized image, purported to be of Abel Stearns, ca. 1850s. The oval image shows a man in a head-and-shoulder view and he wears a dark coat, vest, and cravat and white shirt and high collar. He has thinning hair on top with longer sides and sideburns that are muttonchop-type in length. There is no identification on the card, but an inquiry with the seller indicated that the person from which he obtained the item had a positive identification of Stearns, a Massachusetts native, born in 1798, who settled in Los Angeles in 1828 and became a major merchant, political figure and landowner until his death in 1871. With a couple of small stains, edge abrasions and minor soiling, the condition is good.
