Description
A carte de visite studio portrait of a man, ca. 1862. The image shows a man with dark hair and beard and wearing a long black coat, light colored trousers, white shirt and dark necktie or cravat. He sits sideways on a side chair with his left arm resting on the back. On the bottom margin and reverse is a pencil inscription identifying the subject as John G. Downey, governor of California from 1860 to 1862, but this is clearly not him based on other existing images. This is true also for item .2, said to be Downey's wife, Maria Guirado. With some soiling, light stains, and abrasions on the reverse from adhesives, the condition is good overall.
