Description
A carte de visite studio portrait of a woman, W. W. Wright, San Jose, California, 1862. The woman is wearing a dark, plaid dress with a very wide skirt. She sits on a chair holding a parasol on her lap. Around her is a rustic scene with a fence and other details. On the bottom margin and reverse is a pencil inscription identifying the subject as Maria J. Guirado Downey, wife of the governor of California from 1860 to 1862, but this is clearly not her based on other existing images. This is true also for item .1, said to be of Governor Downey. With some soiling, light stains, and abrasions on the reverse from adhesives, the condition is good overall.
