Description

A carte de visite studio portrait of Alfred and Gertrude Taft by Steve A. Rendall, Los Angeles, ca. 1869. The image shows Alfred standing atop a fabric-covered object and wearing a black jacket and trousers and white shirt. His sister, wearing an off-the-shoulder dress and white hose, sits in a high chair. Behind them is a backdrop with a classical landscape scene upon it. The children, born in 1864 and 1866, appear to be about four and two years old, respectively, and were the offspring of Harley Taft and Mary Eleanor Hazard, who resided at the northwest corner of Fifth and Hill streets (now the site of the Title Guarantee and Trust Building) in Los Angeles. On the reverse is an ink inscription reading "Alfred Harley and Gertrude Taft" with an additional pencil inscription reading "Children of Harley Taft Mother's Brother."As trimmed, with some light soiling and slight curvature, the condition is good overall.
