A carte de visite studio portrait of Henry Hancock and, likely, George Hansen, possibly taken by Henri Penelon, Los Angeles, ca. 1860s. The photo shows Hancock standing in profile at the right with a pencil and notebook in hand, while a man at the left, perhaps his assistant and later successor George Hansen, has his hands on the tall tripod on which is the theodolite, or optical measuring instrument, that was a standard tool of the trade. Tree branches are laid on the floor in front of the two men and what looks like part of a thick tree trunk and other branches behind them. On the reverse are inscriptions identifying Hancock and, apparently, Hansen. With stains, fading, soiling and edge rubbing, the condition is fair
