Description

A check from Temple & Workman, Bankers payable to William Workman, 16 September 1872. The document, filled out by bank president and son-in-law of his partner in the enterprise, is for $200 and with the name "J.W. Drown" in brackets, it appears the money was for him. Drown's legal guardian was Workman after the young man's father died nine years before and he worked at the Homestead until the 1880s (he later was employed by William H. Workman, Workman's nephew, at Boyle Heights.) There is also a date stamp and the check is punctured at the center for cancellation. With the top right corner missing, edge tears, creases and soiling, the condition is fair.
