Description

A Christmas card with a racial stereotype, dated 1885. The item has an image of a stereotyped black man wearing a long blue frock coat, a white vest, white shirt, orange tie, patterned trousers and black shoes. He tips his hat slightly with his right hand and holds what seems to be an embroidered doily or small pillow in his left hand. The eyes are wide open and the exaggerated lips are red. At the bottom is the message, "Wishing You a Merry Christmas." On the reverse is a pencil inscription reading "Christmas 1885." With adhesive residue and stains on the back and some edge wear, abrasions and small stains on the front, the overall condition is good.
