Description

A contract between Volney E. Howard and William Workman for former Mission San Gabriel lands, 20 April 1863. The document specifies two tracts conveyed by the former to the latter "for the benefit of Fielding W. Gibson" comprising 130 acres "in the Montee," or at El Monte, "out of said Mission claim." This refers to Governor Pío Pico's 1846 grant of Mission lands to Workman and Hugo Reid, wih Howard obtaining a quarter interest (as shown in letters in this accession), but notes that the transaction was contingent on the issue that "as soon as the grant is finally confirmed and that Howard agreed to convey an amount of land equal to that which Workman conveyed to Gibson and Asa Ellis. The document was witnessed by Howard's son Charles, an attorney like his father. With a couple of stains and a few creases, the condition is good.
