Description

A copy letter from F.P.F. Temple to Abraham Temple, 20 September 1848. The missive stated it was more than 18 months since the last letter from home was received and that he'd written often since then, including in April; noted the end of the Mexican-American War; informed of the discovery of gold in northern California; reported the marriage of Francisca, daughter of brother Jonathan, to Gregorio de Ajuria; noted the birth of F.P.F.'s second son Francis; and asked about their mother and family. An incomplete postcript concerned applying funds from a bond from John C. Frémont for the 1847 purchase of Alcatraz Island to their mother's needs, though the acquisition was denied by the government, which took military possession of the island, granted in spring 1846 to William Workman by Governor Pío Pico and then transferred to Temple. With folds, a few small stains, soiling and creases, the condition is good.
