Description

A deed for land on the Temple and Gibson Tract (Compton, California) from Fielding W. Gibson and F.P.F. Temple to Nancy Steel, 12 December 1868. The straw deed, involving a nominal $1 payment, was for lot #6, totaling 36.6 acres, on what was formerly part of Rancho San Pedro. Payment, however, of $549 was to be made in three installments at 2% per month interest for a first payment on 1 January 1869 and 10% annual interest for payments due 12 December 1869 and 12 December 1870, upon which a deed of conveyance was to be issued. If Steel, who was to occupy the land, defaulted, possession reverted to Temple and Gibson. The document was signed by Isaias W. Hellman, Temple's banking partner and attorney-in-fact for the transaction. With some small stains, folds and pest damage on the back, the condition is good.
