Description

A document, "Home Tract of J.H. Temple," ca. 1880s. The item describes a walnut orchard around a house "from ine of La Merced Rancho to fence on east and to bank on south" as comprising 25.1 acres while a section "occupied by Ignacio Bermudes including road in front of his house" was another 29.7 acres, so that the total was just shy of 55. This was land on the Rancho Dolores or Potrero de Felipe Lugo, just northeast of La Merced and the Temple Homestead, and which was given to John by his mother, Antonia Margarita Workman de Temple, in 1876 after his return from study in Massachusetts. The property is now part of the Whittier Narrows Nature Center. With many creases, a pair of edge tears and some light soiling, the condition is fair.
