Description

A label for the Golden Gate Fruit Company's orange wine, San Gabriel, ca. 1880s. The item has an image of an orange at the center, the name of the product and the name of the company amidst stylized framing around the fruit. The company was formed by Edward L. Watkins, nephew of noted Los Angeles attorney Joseph Lancaster Brent, and who had been ranch manager for Benjamin D. Wilson and the Wilson ranch under James deBarth Shorb, Wilson's son-in-law. Watkins founded the company at Ramona, now Monterey Park, and his son, Edward F., took over management later. With some stains, soiling and rubbing, the overall condition is fair.
