Description

A large-format portfolio full-length portrait of a woman, C.J. Coules, Los Angeles, ca. 1905. The image shows the woman, in a white embroidered lace dress with a high collar and with her hair pulled up into a bun in the back, sitting on an ornately-carved wooden bench. Coules' cartouche is at the bottom right. The image was put into a paper portfolio with Coules' "Palace Studio" address at 351 S. Broadway on the front bottom right corner. Charles James Coules was born about 1863 in England and worked as a photographer in Los Angeles from the early 1890s. He was married to Marguerite Witzel, whose brother Albert was a film studio photographer in the 1910s and 1920s. Coules was listed as retired in the 1920 census and lived until 1936. With a small loss at the bottom left of the front of the folio, stains, soiling, and wear to the folio, but the photo very clean, the overall condition is good.
