Description
A letter (a) and envelope (b) from Corporal Elmer Barnard to Gladys Wilkinson, 10 February 1919. The four-page letter on one sheet is from the Camp Fremont base hospital, which existed at Menlo Park from July 1917 to September 1919 for the 41st Division, National Guard and then the 8th Division of the United States Army. Barnard, writing to his beau who lived at or near U.S.C. in Los Angeles, was recouperating from an arm injury and discussed a trip up to San Francisco. He also talks about marriage and its joys, feeling happy to be alive, suggesting he saw battle service during the late World War, and notes that a man in the "K" ward shot himself and "must have been crazy." With folds and minor soiling and rubbing, while the envelope is basically the same, the overall condition is good.
