Description
A letter (a) and envelope (b) from W. B. King to Richard Smith, 16 June 1887. On the letterhead of the California Southern Railroad Company, the missive discussed efforts to secure property on the east side of the Los Angeles River in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, which was also being sought by the Southern Pacific Railroad. King mentioned talking to Mayor William H. Workman about this and Workman "said they were disposed to consider the offer [from the Southern Pacific] favorably." This would hurt King's company significantly. He also discussed "the Altadena road" and mentioned an idea to build a railway line to Mt. Wilson--a few years later the Mt. Lowe Railway completed something similar. The envelope has the address, the sending company's name preprinted, stamps, postmarks and cancellations. The word "Personal" is in blue pencil on the front and reverse. With some soiling, a few creases and folds, the condition is good overall, while the envelope has stains, soiling, creases, and the opening tear at the side and is in fair condition.
