Description
A letter (a) and envelope (b) on the letterhead of French & Bryan, Morticians, East Los Angeles, 13 February 1923. The missive is from Nellie Bryan, wife of Redick Bryan, co-owner of the establishment with George A. French. The business had just opened on Whittier Boulevard and had a short life, as by the end of the decade the Bryans were divorced, Redick was working elsewhere in the mortuary business and French returned to the funeral parlor company he ran with his son, George O. French and ran for some years. French had succeeded to another mortuary and was a carpenter before that. Of note is the vignette at the top left of the letter and envelope with the phrase "When the Hour Glass / Has Run its Course / Service." The letter has original folds and light soiling, while the envelope has small stains, soiling, creases and the opening tear, so the overall condition is good.
