Description

A letter and envelope from Marguerite Ringo in New York City, New York to Laura Temple in Alhambra, California, 29 July 1922. In the the five page, handwritten letter (a-e), Ringo discusses some recent troubles in her personal life, such as the failure of her husband's firm in Canada. Ringo explains that, as a professional singer/concert artist, she has been struggling to get the attention of the limited number of U.S. opera companies. Ringo claims that these companies prefer foreign artists or those returning from foreign countries for their experience. Thus, Ringo asks for the Temples to help finance her with $6,000, which she predicts will be the sum of expenses for her work with an Italian tenor she refers to as "Signor Del Papa" and her trip abroad. Ringo promises that she will be able to pay back the debt, with interest, in a few years time, and that she will also be able to help Agnes Temple gain experience abroad in the future. With creases and minor discoloration, the object is in good condition overall. The envelope (b) is postmarked for 30 July 1922. With minor acid burns/discoloration and tears along its top and right sides, the envelope is in fair condition overall.
