A letter from A.A. Smith and John E. Maurer at the Maurer Cattle Company in Los Angeles, California to C.A. Carden, Cashier at the Whittier Savings Bank, in Whittier, California. 18 May 1921. A three page, typed letter on a letterhead for the Maurer Cattle Company. A handwritten note near the top left corner of the first page reads, "For Russell & Maple." Mr. Smith and Mr. Maurer state that they are presenting a map to Mr. Carden of the C.W. Clarke Company's ranch property (Object ID: 2017.41.1.1583), which is being sold by Mr. Smith and W.C. Harris. Mr. Smith and Mr. Maurer describe the property as being one of the last "old-time" cattle ranches, located 10 to 20 miles from Paso Robles, and well-suited for alfalfa cultivation. They also explain that the property can be subdivided into different lands for either raising livestock or cultivating almonds, prunes, pears, and apples. They state that the property ranges from $18 to $35 per acre, that oil and mineral rights will be included in each sale, and that the owners can exclude non-Caucasian persons from being able to purchase the land. A list of the property's parts is given which names the Tule, Roselipp, Cressy, Hummell, Upton, and Vaquero Water ranches, each one ranging from approximately 2,160 to 6,063 acres. They state that the terms are 40% cash with the balance on a mortgage at 6% interest for 5 years, and that Mr. Carden will receive a 5% commission on any sale he makes. They ask that Mr. Carden pass this letter on to other parties if he is not interested. With moderate and minor acid burns; creases; rust stains; yellowing; and minor foxing, the object is in good to fair condition overall.Lexicon
