Description

A letter from an unknown author of the Whittier Extension Company to Albert Ashby in Grape Creek, Illinois. 14 January 1914. A typed, 2 page letter sending information on North Whittier Heights per the request of a postcard (object number 2017.41.1.295) sent by Belle Brandel in Tollhouse, California. The author will mail, under a separate cover, a descriptive folder. This will include a map of the tracts as subdivided, a map of Southern California which shows the location of the property, and articles on the soil, water and climatic conditions of the holdings. Unplanted land has been subdivided into tracts of 2 to 50 acres and cost $400 to $800 an acre. Some of the land has been planted to Eureka Lemons, Valencia Oranges, and Marsh Seedless Grapefruit. These young orchards can be bought in tracts of 5, 10, 15, and 20 acres at a cost of $750 to $975 an acre. The owners of North Whittier Heights plan on increasing the cost of the young groves as of the 1st of February, making now the time to buy. Some of the most successful lemon and orange growers have invested at North Whittier Heights, which shows the success of the land. With the building of a townsite, the completion of a road connecting Whittier and Pomona Boulevard, as well as the ability for the land to produce, the value of this land will only increase. The author closes the letter by inviting Albert Ashby out to see the property if he is in the area. The two pages have been glued together along the top. Page 1 (a) also has 2 small tears on the bottom of the page, a fold of the top right corner, a very small piece missing from the bottom right corner, and a heavy crease across the top from being folded. Page 2 (b) has minor creases in the bottom left corner. This object is in good condition overall.
